One Operator

The interactive walkthrough. Seven steps from one equation to the four walls.

Step 1 of 7

One equation

The claim: every elementary function you use — sin, cos, exp, ln, polynomials, rationals, sqrt, roots, the Gaussian PDF, sigmoid, softplus, softmax — can be written as a finite tree using exactly one binary operator.

That operator is:

eml(x, y) = e^x − ln(y)

Two parameters. One subtraction. One exp. One ln. Nothing else.
